Understanding and Facilitating Communication - A Building Capacity Approach at Auchtermuchty Primary School

Rationale:  Speech and Language Therapists (SLT's) have always worked with their education colleagues, realising that in most instances a joint approach would be best for children with speech, language and communication difficulties. The increases in the numbers and identification of children with additional support needs in mainstream classes have further reinforced the need for joint working.

Given this context, SLTs have reflected on the ways that they have been used to work with children in schools. Initial discussions suggest that both Education and Speech and Language services recognise how far they have come in their joint response to inclusion and are positive about further development of collaborative working practices.

SLT's and staff at our school have been working closely together to develop a simple model of the way the SLT service would like to develop in order to improve the outcome for children through collaborative practice with schools.

Our Communication Week developed from meetings with SLT's and school staff when it became clear that school staff wanted to know more about what SLT's did and SLT's wanted to know more about what goes on in our classrooms.  During the week lots of things have been going on including:

  • Open Doors - when SLT's are invited to visit classrooms
  • School staff given the opportunity to observe SLT's working with children in school, at Mountfleurie Language class and in other school in Fife
  • SLT's have worked with each class from Nursery to P7 to develop awareness of the importance of good communication.
  • SLT's joined in Shared Soft Start and then met with parents for tea/coffee and cake - the aim being to chat with parents about speech and language therapy
  • A poster competition from Nursery to P7 on the theme of  "How we communicate?" and "Who we Communicate with?"
  • Special Communication Assemblies on Monday and on Friday when each class demonstrated what they had learned through the week.
  • An extended twilight on Wednesday which involved all our SLT's, the whole school staff including our Janitor and our Educational Psychologist - our energy levels were boosted with a lovely tea.
