Fife Key Fund

Fife Keyfund is a deposit guarantee scheme that assists people who are homeless into a sustainable tenancy within the private rented sector. The scheme has been operating for twelve years and continues to be funded by Fife Council, whilst managed by a local voluntary sector organisation, Trust In Fife.

The scheme has a pivotal role within Prevention First, offering a realistic housing option alongside that of the statutory homeless route. Since Prevention First commenced in July 2011 Fife Keyfund has assisted 1 in 4 (27%) of those who presented as homeless.

The initial service offered includes advice and guidance on accessing housing in the private rented sector, an affordability assessment and an introduction to landlords with available property throughout Fife . The scheme puts in place a formal guarantee against the landlord’s required deposit and actively supports the tenant in all aspects related to independent, as well as community, living.

The scheme maintains positive relationships in all areas within the private rented sector working actively with landlords and tenants alike. During 2011/12 226 cases were closed with claims totalling £2,955 against the £78,385 that was guaranteed.
During the same period 294 households were assisted in accessing appropriate accommodation, with tenants paying £21,577 towards their own deposit, ensuring sustainability, security of tenure and financial stability.
