Many years ago, Councillor Ann Smith was at the forefront of shopping provision for people with disabilities and was rightly commended for her support for the establishment of Shopmobility Services in Kirkcaldy. Tomorrow (Wednesday) Kirkcaldy Area councillors will be meeting the Shopmobility staff to start the process of raising awareness of their services as we move towards a complete traffic ban from Kirkcaldy High Street between 10am and 5pm. We have six months to ensure facilities for people with mobility issues are as good as they can be and if that means further investment in Shopmobility then in my view that would be money well spent. While the media concentration is on the blue badge holders, and that is very important, we cannot underestimate the threat to public safety posed by the current traffic chaos. Older people and children are particularly at risk and partially sighted and hard of hearing shoppers will certainly benefit from the planned changes. I am sure Shopmobility can continue to provide support to shoppers with mobility problems and Blue Badge holders who perhaps have not considered them previously may be pleasantly surprised by the services they can provide.
